EMPTA Welcomes FEMACCA: Driving Sustainable Change – 10 August 2023

EMPTA had the esteemed privilege of hosting The Federation of Malaysia Chinese Commerce Association (FEMACCA) at our headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. The focal point of our discussion centred on the critical need for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices into their Risk Management strategies.

FEMACCA emphasized the imperative of ESG integration in addressing pressing concerns such as the escalating carbon emissions and their adverse impact on our planet. It was highlighted that global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from energy and industrial activities soared to a staggering all-time high of 36.8 Gt in 2022, with the vehicle and transportation sector emerging as a significant contributor.

Recognizing the pivotal role of the automotive industry in Malaysia, FEMACCA underscored the forthcoming implementation of ESG principles in the New Industrial Master Plan 2030. This visionary plan aims to achieve a remarkable 45% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030, marking a decisive stride towards a more sustainable future.

In alignment with these transformative goals, EMPTA is steadfast in driving change within our sector. We are actively exploring innovative strategies, including the adoption of biodegradable packaging materials and the gradual adjustment of air conditioning usage to curtail energy consumption.

Amidst contemplations by the Malaysian Government regarding the possibility of implementing a Carbon Tax, it is reassuring to note that SMEs will be afforded ample time for adaptation. Additionally, we are committed to supporting our exporters by furnishing ESG impact reports, ensuring compliance with the sustainability requirements of discerning clients.

In our journey towards a greener tomorrow, EMPTA remains unwavering in our commitment to promoting human rights and gender equality within our operations. We recognize that every endeavor, irrespective of its scale, contributes to our collective endeavor of forging a better, more sustainable world.
